Denarius – Elagabalus (Heliogabalus) – AD 220

Roman silver coin struck under Elagabalus (also sometimes referred to as Heliogabalus). The obverse bears the portrait of the emperor, and the reverse depicts the god Sol.

The emperor, born as Sextus Varius Avitus Bassianus, took the name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus upon his accession. He introduced the cult of the Syrian solar deity Elagabal (from whom his modern name derives). This cult became associated with that of Sol, and this iconography on the coinage reflects the emperor’s personal connection with the solar god.
